There are many great questions in in this world, such as what is the meaning of life? How can I achieve happiness? Even the greatest of philosophers struggled with these big questions.  Plato and Aristotle debated logic and politics, Locke and Descartes might have debated science and mathematics. However, these great thinkers never had to deal with such a vexing question as the illustrious sage Gary Bettman has to deal with today. That is now that there is a team in Winnipeg, what is all this realignment fuss aboot?

Well philosopher Bettman has come up with a rather innovative idea, not as innovative as saying the the Earth is round, but still an interesting one. He proposes having 2 15 team conferences, each having 2 divisions for 4 total. Each conference would have an 8 team division and a 7 team division. Reports say these divisions would be named: Pacific, Midwest, South and East. This makes sense as several teams have to endure long travel times and to group teams by geographic areas would help alleviate such concerns. The article also mentions Detroit and Columbus are prime candidates to move to the Eastern Conference. My previous article on Winnipeg and realignment only had very minor realignments happening, but since Bettman has thrown this idea on the table it seems, this is how I think these Geo-Divisions would look:

Western Conference

Pacific Division

San Jose

Los Angeles

Anaheim

Phoenix

Vancouver

Edmonton

Calgary

Colorado

Midwest Division

Winnipeg

Minnesota

Chicago

St Louis

Dallas

Nashville

Columbus

Eastern Conference

Southern Division

Florida

Tampa Bay

Philadelphia

Pittsburgh

New Jersey

Carolina

Washington

Eastern Division

Detroit

Toronto

Ottawa

Montreal

Boston

NY Islanders

NY Rangers

Buffalo

They aren’t fully geographic as the locations of teams complicate it seeing that most are in the Eastern Time Zone and clustered in and around the Great Lakes and the Northeast. So obviously in this scenario Columbus still gets stuck in the West, but trying to move both Detroit and Columbus to the East is a bit difficult and in the end Detroit will get the nod to move east way before Columbus does.
