There’s so much going on in movie news right now that instead of covering it in a dozen separate articles, I wanted to give some summaries all in one spot. While the second half of this article contains several stories and (at least partially substantiated) rumors, we’ll first start with the money…

Non-Financial News

According to Deadline, the 1983 Matthew Broderick classic WAR GAMES is getting the remake treatment, and it has Seth Gordon (KING OF KONG, HORRIBLE BOSSES) to both develop the film and direct it. If you haven’t seen the original, now would be a good time to check it out. You’ll have enough time to forget about how good it is before seeing what will likely be an enjoyable-yet-lesser film.

From remakes to big-screen adaptations, Ron Howard will hope to again have the success he captured with THE GRINCH as he tackles another “from the pages” transformation. This time he’s trying his hand at a live-action version of MAD Magazine’s SPY VS SPY. No word yet on who’s going to be filling the titular roles, but GordonAndTheWhale names Adam Sandler and Vince Vaughn as the likely leading candidates. I might suggest Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, but their guess is probably better informed than mine.

Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot THE MAN OF STEEL is adding significant members to its cast. SpinOff reports that not only is Russell Crowe going to be portraying Jor-El (the biological father to Supes for those not in the know), but Emmy Award winning Julia Ormond will be portraying his wife Lara, Superman’s biological mother. GordonAndTheWhale adds that Chris Meloni (Law And Order: SVU) will also be part of the cast.

The Wrap reports that Kevin Connolly (Eric from ENTOURAGE) is hoping that his next project will involve Kimbo Slice… or at least the life story of the backyard-fighting YouTube sensation.  How close are they to making it a reality? “I have his life rights, we have a script that’s great. It’s out and about, and the powers that be are trying to put the money together,” says Connolly, who hopes Kimbo will star as himself in the film.

Relativity Media is giving the reboot treatment to cult classic film THE CROW, and they already have three important decisions made. Alex Tse (WATCHMEN) will perform screenwriting duties. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will act in the film, but as a secondary character, since Bradley Cooper (HANGOVER, LIMITLESS) has the lead role. If you don’t like the news that Cooper will be portraying the same role as Brandon Lee from the original, don’t shoot the messenger. At least the studio is saying they expect this to be a “gritty” remake, still focusing on the 1989 comic book series by James O’Barr. (source: GordonAndTheWhale)
