Well despite denying report after report, Urban Meyer will be indeed be the next head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and the one to clean up Jim Tressel’s mess. The Webbernets, Twitterverse  and blogosphere erupted nearly simultaneously with the news of the hire. He will certainly have a huge task ahead of him as he inherits a prestigious program that has been stained by scandal and NCAA violations that forced Sweater Vest Man to resign earlier this year.

So what does this mean for Ohio State going forward? Well it is certainly the biggest splash they could’ve made with a coaching hire. Meyer is Ohio born and bred, played DB for Cincinnati and was a grad assistant at Ohio State in the 80s under Earle Bruce. It is highly unlikely that the university seriously focused on anyone else and no one really believed him when he said he was staying at ESPN.

The Pros of this move are many, as well asthe cons. One pro is that the team will feature the high-powered offense that Meyer is known for, which is a good thing considered that the unit was at times atrocious this season. On the same note, Braxton Miller must be ecstatic, now that he will be coached by a spread master like Meyer. With his coaching ties, it is likely that he can assemble a loaded coaching staff that will only increase the expectations. Finally and perhaps, most importantly, Meyer is one of the best recruiters in the nation. He has the connections in Florida obviously, but he can start by keeping the best Ohio products in state.

It can’t be as rosy and great as some say it will be, right? While he was able to succeed as a coach in the tough SEC, coming to the Big Ten has its own challenges. Michigan State, Wisconsin, Nebraska and even Penn State are the elite teams that he will have to play regularly  and winning consistently in Happy Valley or Camp Randall is never easy. Meyer will also have the absurdly large elephant in the room of the recent scandal hanging over his head as he starts his tenure. Some of his detractors will paint him as a snarky, arrogant coach that is not really an improvement over Tressel. So cleaning up Ohio State’s image will be a very difficult task, if it can be done at all. Another point that might work against Meyer is that expectations are already sky high and he’s not officially the coach. Buckeyes backers already are making absurd predictions for next season, which won’t make his job any easier.

Finally, the recent ‘debacle’ of losing to Michigan has Buckeyes fans thinking that Meyer will start another win streak against the Wolverines, much like Tressel. Not so fast as the Wolverines are much better under Brady Hoke then they’ve been in a long time. The fact that he beat Ohio State makes this a rivalry again. With two high profile coaches on the sidelines, the rivalry will be intense again, perhaps coming close to the Ten Year War. Then again Meyer might not be able to accomplish that. Why you ask? Well what are his initials?

The Meyer hiring is exactly what Ohio State needed. He’s an Ohio boy that is obviously invested in bringing the Buckeyes back to prominence. However, all the predictions and effusive praise will mean nothing until next season starts. Just getting the Buckeyes back to the elite of the Big Ten will not be enough for Meyer, as he will need to clean up the program’s reputation.
