If MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is any good, the groundwork for sequels is already being laid. As far back as 2011, the MAD MAX project was never about being a remake, but a reboot to the Mel Gibson series of films from 30 years ago. Not only is the intention for this to be a multi-film series, but efforts have been made to make that a reality.

Tom Hardy, the actor in the titular role, has already signed a contract showing his intention to be in up to four films in the series, and by his account, we’ll get at least two. In an interview with Esquire magazine, Hardy says that the final cut of the film is “fucking unbelievable”. This being his first time at the helm of a big budget (reportedly $150 M or more), he also says he’s “never been more excited and out of my comfort zone”.

There’s no assurances that all four of the movies Hardy has signed-on for will occur. “Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it’s a business,” says Hardy in the Esquire interview. But given Hardy’s amazing track record with movies and the trailer below, I’d be surprised if a second one doesn’t take shape.

The aforementioned interview with Esquire is a good one, highly recommended reading.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD hits screens May 15th and co-stars Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult.
