We have our first look at a teaser poster from Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams, and it’s quite interesting to say the least. Not only is it a spin on what Christopher Nolan did with his Dark Knight Rising poster, but we get a sense of the tone, location and most importantly, the villain for Star Trek Into Darkness.

Clearly the ruin in the foreground was shaped to depict the Starfleet insignia, much like Nolan did with the Batman insignia in his trilogy-completing project in 2012 for Dark Knight Rises. In the background, if you look closely, elements from present-day London can be seen, giving the idea that a portion of the film may involve the iconic British city being a target for an attack, be it in the prologue or as the story unfolds during Star Trek Into Darkness.

Perhaps most interesting is the lone individual located on the poster. Though not specifically indicated, the individual standing atop the rubble and looking towards London is a villain from the film, in all likelihood Benedict Cumberbatch (of SHERLOCK fame).

From SpinOff.com:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to open on May 17th, 2013 and stars Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Mr Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov), John Cho (Sulu), Karl Urban (Bones) with Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch joining the cast. Rumors on the identity of Cumberbatch’s character include Khan, Garth Of Izar and Gary Mitchell, but nothing is confirmed as of this point. We’ll keep you posted as more rumors arise and as confirmations come from credible sources.
