I was expecting a really great movie from this one, and because I didn’t hear too many glowing reviews from the critics, I lowered my expectations and decided to wait until it showed up on DVD.

The premise of this one is that George Clooney is a (former?) member of an Army unit trained to use extra-sensory powers in combat, and Ewan McGreggor is a reporter doing a story on it (after meeting Clooney at a hotel bar in Kuwait while trying to get into Iraq to do some war journalism).

Some of the best parts of the movie for me were the references to Clooney being a Jedi and explaining to McGreggor how his powers work.  For some reason it just seemed ironic that Ewan played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Jeff Bridges was hilarious in his role as the eccentric soldier-turned-hippie leader of the Army unit.

As you might expect, Kevin Spacey was really good in his role as the antagonist who is jealous of Clooney.

I’d recommend this one to anyone over 18 – man or woman.  I enjoyed it, so did my wife, so did my in-laws.  I’d very cautiously recommend it to people under the age of 18, but I would caution of letdown, because it’s not an extremely funny movie, nor is it too action packed. There is some very brief nudity, but if you blink, you’d miss it.

I enjoyed it, not a 5 star movie by any means, and while I’d watch it again if it were on television, I wouldn’t buy the DVD.
