I can’t remember which of the late night shows I was watching – most likely Conan O’Brien – but Charlyne Yi was the guest.  She claimed to be from Knocked Up or SuperBad, but honestly I didn’t remember seeing her before.  She seemed slightly awkward, and I couldn’t turn away – not in a train wreck sort of way, though.  In a “is she really this awkward? why am I finding her so funny?” sort of way.

By the end of the interview, I was convinced that she was really funny.  She claimed to have written a song for her boyfriend, who she purported was in attendance.  She “just happened” to have an electric guitar and amp there, and she played it.

Here’s the video for that, but keep reading to read what I thought of Paper Heart

This article isn’t about Charlyne Yi, it’s about Paper Heart – which is a part documentary, part drama, part comedy surrounding the concept of her trying to find out if she believes in love. They blurred the lines really well, to the point where you really start wondering which parts are scripted and which parts aren’t.

If you don’t like qwirky people, don’t watch this movie. Charlyne Yi isn’t ever going to challenge Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Garner for a role, because none of the roles they would be vying for would suit her. She’s good at what she does, though, and if you like Wes Anderson movies, Judd Apatow movies, the band Weezer, Conan O’Brien or The Muppet Show, I’d suggest checking out Paper Heart.
