I never did get into the television version of M*A*S*H.  I was probably too young to really appreciate the characters, but having seen the movie, I’m going to be looking for the DVDs of season 1.  If the show’s half as good as the movie, I expect I’ll end up watching all of the episodes.

Not only was M*A*S*H a funny movie, but it also had some very serious scenes in it, as you might expect from a movie set during war time.  The theme song used for both the movie and the television show was recognizable to me prior to seeing the movie, given the number of times I saw the opening sequence of the television show (admittedly I was usually in the midst of trying to change the channel – through my own desire or being directed to do so by someone else).  I never realized how dark the lyrics were until I watched the opening few minutes of the movie.  Not until close to the end of the film did I realize the somewhat heart-warming reason the doctors were singing “Suicide Is Painless”.

For anyone who hasn’t seen M*A*S*H, I’d definitely recommend it.  I don’t plan to nominate it in any of the award categories for the 2010 End Of Year awards, but I’m glad I watched it.

For those of you who have already seen the film, here are a few of my thoughts on various things:

– Stealing the Jeep right from the beginning was awesome, and the fact that he returned it at the end gave nice continuity from the fact that he said he was only borrowing it.

– I’ve been a fan of Tom Skerritt for a while, but at the start of the film I almost didn’t recognize him.

– The suicide processional was unique to say the least, complete with their own Last Supper.

– Still to this point I don’t understand why “Hot Lips” Hoolihan would be friends with the guys at the end of the film after what they put her through.  The broadcast radio scene from which she gets her nickname was a fun prank.  The shower thing wasn’t.

– I thought the football game was completely unnecessary, and it makes me wonder if they needed to expand the length of the film.  It was fun to watch, but it didn’t seem to totally fit with the rest of the movie.
