I’ve always been a fan of The Beatles, and while they were always in my Top 10 favorite bands, they didn’t enter my Top 4 list until a year or two ago when a friend of mine let me borrow his copy of the White Album.  Since then I’ve bought more of their albums for my collection, purchased Beatles: Rock Band for Playstaion 3, seen the Love cirque du soleil show in Las Vegas and recently watched A Hard Day’s Night.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I DVR’ed this movie, but I was game to give it a shot – whatever might be involved.

When I started watching, I was pleased to find that this was a movie in which all four of The Beatles were the main characters, giving me a chance to become more familiar with them.  Of course I know about Paul McCartney and John Lennon, but I’m less familiar with Ringo Starr and George Harrison (whom I’m sad to say I probably couldn’t have identified in a picture unless the only three other individuals in the picture were Paul, John and Ringo).

The storyline was simple and interesting enough:  they were taking a ride on a train, headed for a television program taping where they’d play a couple songs.  Oh, and Paul’s (other) grandfather was along for the journey.  That’s actually just as much a part of the plot as anything else.

The end result of this movie is a fun little ride along with the Fab Four as they get into mischief, causing troubles for each other and strangers alike.

Some people I know didn’t particularly enjoy A Hard Day’s Night, and while my first thought was that they didn’t like to sit through the music videos the storyline became at times, they assured me it was because they didn’t think any of the gags or dialogue were entertaining along the way – quite surprising to me because that’s what gives the movie its charm.

If you’re a Beatles fan or you’re in the mood for a comedy which will provide mostly chuckles instead of all-out laughter, I’d say you should give it a shot.  If you get HD television over your cable / satellite, you might do well to check PalladiaHD, a channel on which A Hard Day’s Night is shown at least once a week or thereabouts.

If I’m ever bored and see that this movie is on, I’d give it another look.
