WrestleMania 27

WrestleMania 27

After the Royal Rumble three weeks ago I gave you my predictions for what the card of WrestleMania 27 would look like. Now that the Elimination Chamber has come to pass, here are my updated card predictions:

WWE Championship
The Miz © with Alex Riley vs. John Cena
Special Enforcer: The Rock

– We’ve seen The Rock say that he’s going to be involved at WrestleMania in practically every way but wrestling in a match. We’ve also seen The Rock run his mouth against both The Miz and John Cena. Miz vs. Cena was always the money main event going into WrestleMania thanks to both men’s mainstream popularity. Add The Rock as the special enforcer – or perhaps even special guest referee – and it’s simply electric.

World Heavyweight Championship
Triple Threat Match
Edge © vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian

– I think Edge vs. Del Rio alone should have been enough, but as we saw tonight at the Elimination Chamber, Christian made his return and began getting his revenge against Del Rio. Everyone always wonders when Christian is going to get his chance at the top – well, here it is. However, WrestleMania is clearly Alberto Del Rio’s night, but that won’t stop the WWE from dangling the carrot in front of Christian’s Peeps that Captain Charisma might win the big one. In reality, someone needs to tap out to the cross-arm breaker, and it’s not going to be Edge.

The Undertaker & The Big Show vs. The Corre’s Wade Barrett & Ezekiel Jackson

– Three weeks ago, much of the internet wrestling community marked out at the mysterious 2.21.11 video, with hopes that it could be signaling Sting’s arrival in the WWE. Well, as we know now, that video is clearly for the return of The Undertaker. And I think that while WrestleMania in Atlanta would be the perfect place for Sting to make his mark in the WWE, I think it’s more and more unlikely that we’re going to see the Stinger come into the WWE without a Hall of Fame induction, and the head of the class this year is already Shawn Michaels. Combine that with the return of The Rock hosting Mania and Stone Cold Steve Austin, Trish Stratus, and Booker T on Tough Enough, I don’t think the WWE needs Sting this year. Furthermore, Taker does not appear to be in the greatest health and there is no HBK to elevate him to a five-star match this year. Wade Barrett led the Nexus to help bury Undertaker alive several months ago. Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson of The Corre have decided to pick on Big Show, and WWE keeps teasing us with Big Show vs. Big Zeke interactions. Combine the two, and I think you’ve got a safe Mania match for Taker while wrapping up two open storylines. The dirt sheets reported that Undertaker showed up at Smackdown a few weeks ago specifically to watch Wade and Zeke work, adding some support to this tag team match idea. Alternatively, we could see Undertaker vs. Barrett and Big Show vs. Zeke as separate matches.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk

– I don’t think there is any doubt that CM Punk vs. Randy Orton will continue at WrestleMania after their interactions in the Elimination Chamber tonight.

Rey Mysterio vs. “Dashing” Cody Rhodes

– This match is nearly a given seeing how Cody Rhodes blames Rey Mysterio for his facial injuries. Furthermore, the dirt sheets say Rey specifically wants to work this match with Cody at WrestleMania, so I expect this to happen.

Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. with Maryse
If Lawler wins, he gets 5 minutes in the ring with Michael Cole

– Jerry “The King” Lawler lost fairly cleanly to the Miz in his WWE Championship match tonight, but throwing The Miz into Michael Cole at the announce desk indicates the feud between King and Cole isn’t over yet. Combine that with the fact that Ted DiBiase was knocked in the jaw by King a couple of weeks ago, further embarrassing Ted who has been low on luck, and I think we’re going to see these two slug it out. King will win, Maryse will slap Ted after the loss and break up with him for good, and King will deliver a WrestleMania moment by punching Michael Cole in the jaw.

Money in the Bank
John Morrison vs. R-Truth vs. Daniel Bryan © vs. Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Kofi Kingston © vs. Jack Swagger

– I think the biggest surprise inclusion in here is Sheamus. Everyone has been expecting, though not eagerly, Triple H’s return to conclude his feud with Sheamus. However, as I said above, the WWE has loaded up on high profile names as of late, thus not necessitating the return of The Game, not even to promote his movie. I think they’re going save Triple H’s return for something like SummerSlam when WWE is suffering from its usual summer lull. I think the fact that there are three former world champions in this match, along with 5 guys who have been in main event matches from time to time, should make for an exciting Money in the Bank contest. If I’m wrong and WWE does pull the trigger on the return of Triple H to have a match with Sheamus, just slot Evan Bourne into this match instead, assuming he is healed up from his injury.

WWE Tag Team Championship
Fatal Four Way Elimination Match
The Corre’s Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel © vs. The New Nexus’ Michael McGillicutty & Husky Harris vs. Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov with Tamina vs. ??? & ???

– Before The Corre won the Tag Team titles at Elimination Chamber, the New Nexus was chasing Santino and Kozlov. I think these three teams are destined to do battle, but Triple Threat tag matches are a bit awkward. Throw in a fourth team to give two other guys a pay day, and you’ve got yourself an elimination match with a throwback to the two Fatal Four Way tag contests we saw at WrestleMania 20. Possible fourth teams include David Otunga/Mason Ryan, Mark Henry/Great Khali, Mark Henry/Evan Bourne, The Usos, and Zack Ryder & Primo Colon.

12 Diva Tag Team Match
Trish Stratus, Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Gail Kim and Eve © vs. Michelle McCool, Layla, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, Alicia Fox, and Melina

– Trish Stratus came to the aid of Kelly Kelly tonight at the Elimination Chamber against LayCool. They already promoted Trish’s appearance earlier. This second one couldn’t have been for nothing. After all, were Beth and Natalya too busy Tweeting in the back to help out Kelly if they really wanted to? I think we’re going to see Trish Stratus come back for her third post-retirement match, teaming with Kelly Kelly against LayCool. All the other Divas have had issues with LayCool as well, including Beth and Natalya. Eve is your Diva’s Champion floating rather aimlessly with no specific feud since they’ve blown off the matches with Melina and Natalya so fast. Throw in Gail Kim who has been feuding with the Bella Twins. Add heel-for-no-good-reason Melina and Alicia Fox to the heel team, and you’ve got yourself a 12 Diva Tag Team Match. That only really leaves Rosa Mendes and Kaitlyn off the card, but I don’t think anyone would care at that point. I’m sure they can do a backstage skit with Hornswoggle.

Pre-Show WrestleMania Battle Royal

– Featuring anyone else not listed or specifically excluded above – mostly the regulars you see on WWE Superstars every Thursday night.

There you have it. Raw tomorrow night should give us further indication what direction WWE is heading in for WrestleMania. Let me know what you think of my card in the comments, or what you would book differently. Thanks for reading.
