All three of the significant movie openings from this weekend were in the top 5. That only happened one other time in August, one weekend in July, not a single weekend in June and only once in May.

Comparing the earnings of the debuting movies those weekends:

May 6-8
Films: Thor, Jumping the Broom, Something Borrowed
Combined: $95 M
Top 5: $135 M

July29-31
Films: Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs, Crazy Stupid Love
Combined: $92 M
Top 5: $139 M

August 12-14
Films: The Help, Final Destination 5, 30 Minutes or Less
Combined: $57 M
Top 5: $98.5 M

August 26-28
Films: Columbiana, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Our Idiot Brother
Combined: $25.5 M
Top 5: $48.5 M

After four weeks in the theater, only three films remained in the top 4 this summer:

  • Fast 5
  • Transformers 3
  • Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (which occurred this week)

The Help is likely to be on that list as of next week, as it held onto the #1 spot this week – the only movie to hold the top spot in its 3rd week at the box office.

Conan The Barbarian continues to fail big, having its weekend box office revenue drop 70% this weekend. It’s now at $16.5  M after 2 weekends… making it VERY unlikely it’ll ever recover even a third of its $90 M budget.

Other big drops for their second weekend:

Captain America (60% drop)

Cars 2 (60.3% drop)

Fast Five (62.4% drop)

The Hangover Part II (63.5% drop)

Green Lantern (66% drop)

Priest (68.2% drop)

Glee The 3D Concert (69.7% drop)

Harry Potter 7 part 2 (72% drop, though it still had $47.4 M that weekend, the same amount Transformers 3 had in its second weekend)
