Now that the college football bowl schedule has been announced, it’s time for the college football world to turn its attention to shameless self-promotion by companies that are not even the slightest bit associated in any way with the game of football. Sure R+L Carriers might deliver shipments of footballs or Vizio TVs might broadcast football games, but most of the bowl names are stretches. Russell Athletic is about the only one that fits since they make gear for a few teams. Who cares??? It’s bowl season!

Gildan New Mexico – Nevada vs Arizona
Albuquerque, NM  Dec 15th
It’s a matchup of two top ground games as each features a 1700+ yard rusher. It will certainly be a shootout, but with Matt Scott at QB, Arizona has a much more balanced offense and it will be the difference.

Famous Idaho Potato – Toledo vs #22 Utah State
Boise, ID  Dec 15th
Toledo has been tenacious all year going 9-3 and the losses each coming by a touchdown. However, they face a Top 10 defense in the Aggies. That will be what carries Utah State to the win.

S.D. County Credit Union Poinsettia – BYU vs San Diego State
San Diego, CA  Dec 20th
BYU has a stingy defense that helped it qualify for the postseason, but SDSU is riding a huge wave of momentum after winning their last seven for a share of the MWC title. Look for the Aztecs to triumph in this one.

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg – UCF vs Ball State
St Petersburg, FL  Dec 21st
UCF almost won the C-USA title, but Ball State has played a tougher schedule and is on a six game winning streak. The Cardinals will roll to victory here.

R+L Carriers New OrleansEast Carolina vs Louisiana-Lafayette
New Orleans  Dec 22nd
The Ragin’ Cajuns had a surprising season and almost beat Florida. However, the Shane Carden-Justin Hardy passing connection for East Carolina will prove too much to overcome.

MAACO Las Vegas – Washington vs #19 Boise State
Las Vegas  Dec 22nd
Washington faced 4 top 10 teams and struggled offensively. Boise State had its own troubles, but are too talented to drop this game.

Sheraton Hawaii – Fresno State vs SMU
Honolulu  Dec 24th
SMU needed a win in the final weekend to become eligible, while Derek Carr had a monster season at QB for Fresno State. So look for the Bulldogs to make it to 10 wins.

Little Caesars Pizza – Western Kentucky vs Central Michigan
Detroit  Dec 26th
Central needed to win its final three games to make the cut, but they will be able to handle a mediocre Hilltopper team.

Northrop Grumman Military – #24 San Jose State vs Bowling Green
Washington, DC  Dec 27th
Bowling Green has a stout defense but hasn’t faced a passing attack like San Jose State’s, which almost made it into the Top 10. The Spartans will cap off their great season with a bowl win.

Belk – Cincinnati vs Duke
Charlotte, NC  Dec 27th
Duke is in a bowl for the first time in what seems like forever. They will be no match for the balanced offense and stout defense of Cincinnati.

Bridgepoint Education Holiday – Baylor vs #17 UCLA
San Diego, CA  Dec 27th
There will be no defense in this one as each team features high powered ground games. UCLA will come in angry after dropping consecutive games to Stanford with something to prove.

AdvoCare V100 Independence – Ohio vs Lousiana-Monroe
Shreveport, LA  Dec 28th
Both teams struggled late after good starts to the season. Ohio lost its last three and ULM won its last two, so that could be what squeaks them by the Bobcats.

Russell Athletic – Rutgers vs Virginia Tech
Orlando, FL  Dec 28th
The nightmare season for the Hokies will continue as they’ll get dominated by a Rutgers team that came very close to winning the Big East outright.

Meineke Car Care of Texas – Minnesota vs Texas Tech
Houston  Dec 28
As happy as Minnesota is to be in a bowl, they’re no match for Seth Doege and the dynamic Tech offense. This one won’t be pretty for the Gophers.

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces – Rice vs Air Force
Fort Worth, TX  Dec 29th
Both teams just squeaked in, mostly due to porous defenses. Rice has a decent offense, but Air Force’s 2nd ranked rushing attack will be the deciding factor.

New Era Pinstripe – West Virginia vs Syracuse
New York City  Dec 29th
Syracuse ended the season on a hot streak, getting a share of the Big East title. West Virginia has stopped the bleeding and Geno Smith is still a threat, so expect him to air it out big time in this victory.

Kraft Fight Hunger – Navy vs Arizona State
San Francisco  Dec 29th
Arizona State struggled during the season, but capped it off with an upset over rival Arizona. However, they won’t be able to stand up to Navy’s high powered ground game.

Valero Alamo – #23 Texas vs #13 Oregon State
San Antonio, TX  Dec 29th
Texas has backed into the postseason and had trouble all season. Then again Oregon State has both beaten and lost to good teams so they’re a mystery. The Longhorns can’t get anything going, so look for the Beavers to step up and edge them out.

Buffalo Wild Wings – TCU vs Michigan State
Tempe, AZ  Dec 29
Speaking of disappointing seasons, what happened to Sparty? TCU has struggled too, but not on the same scale. This will be an incredibly close game, but Le’Veon Bell will have a big day to be the difference and the Sparty defense holding the athletic TCU playmakers in check just enough.

Franklin American Mortgage Music City – NC State vs Vanderbilt
Nashville, TN  Dec 31st
An upset of then #4 FSU is the Wolfpack’s highlight in an otherwise inconsistent season. Vandy’s 4 losses all came to good teams and their stingy defense kept them competitive. NC State will not be able to overcome with the Commodores winning convincingly.

Hyundai Sun – USC vs Georgia Tech
El Paso, TX  Dec 31st
A 6-7 team in a bowl? Tech’s powerful triple option will not be able to keep up with Matt Barkley, who will be determined to end his career on a high note. He and Marqise Lee will have a field day against the Yellow Jacket defense.

AutoZone Liberty – Iowa State vs Tulsa
Memphis, TN Dec 31st
Barely making it into the postseason, Iowa State will have a hard time with the C-USA champs. Tulsa has three backs capable of running for big yards and that will prove too much for the Cyclones.

Chick-Fil-A – #8 LSU vs #14 Clemson
Atlanta  Dec 31st
Both teams came within one win for playing for their conference championships. This game will be strength vs strength with  LSU’s stellar defense against Clemson’s dynamic offense. However, that defense will do just enough for Geaux Tigers to win in the end. Gator – Mississippi State vs #20 Northwestern
Jacksonville, FL Jan 1st
Miss State started strong before fading down the stretch, while Northwestern kept going strong the whole season. Their Mark-Kolter rushing combo will be what gets them the bowl win over a worn down Bulldog team.

Heart of Dallas – Purdue vs Oklahoma State
Dallas  Jan 1st
The Boilermakers needed to win their final three to become eligible and don’t have enough on defense to stand up to the Cowboys’ explosive offense. Purdue will be vulnerable and OK State will pounce.

Outback – #10 South Carolina vs #18 Michigan
Tampa, FL  Jan 1st
As big a Wolverine fan as I am, I have to pick the Gamecocks here. The Michigan defense is underrated, but South Carolina’s is much better. Jadeveon Clowney will be in Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson’s faces all game. This game will be close, but it’ll come down to South Carolina’s offense wearing down the Wolverine defense enough to make some big plays.

Capital One – #7 Georgia vs #16 Nebraska
Orlando, FL  Jan 1st
Nebraska is reeling after getting steamrolled by Wisconsin and Georgia was one Les Miles clock management fail away from facing ND. You can bet the Bulldogs will be pissed and the Cornhuskers are right there for them to take out their frustrations.

Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio – Wisconsin vs #6 Stanford
Pasadena, CA  Jan 1st
UCLA proved you can run against Stanford’s front seven and Wisconsin is coming off a run-fueled dismantling of Nebraska. This is will be an old-fashioned pound the rock type of game featuring two top backs in Stepfan Taylor and Montee Ball. What it will come down to is which defense performs the best. That Cardinal front seven has proven to be one of the best in country and the defense leads the nation in sacks, so they’ll roll to their 5th Rose Bowl win, despite Barry Alvarez back on the sidelines.

Discover Orange – #15 Northern Illinois vs #12 Florida State
Miami  Jan 1st
Northern Illinois is in a BCS bowl. So all you Oklahoma/SEC/anti-non AQ people can stop your whining and deal with it. Given all the Huskie hate, the Seminoles are overwhelmingly being picked in a blowout. As headgear aficionado Lee Corso would say ‘Not So Fast, My Friend!’ NIU features the top rusher in the nation in QB Jordan Lynch and an offense that averages nearly 500 yards a game. While FSU’s defense is ranked in the Top 10, it has given up tons of yards to lesser competition. This will be very close, most likely coming down to the final play, but Northern Illinois will vanquish Goliath.

Allstate Sugar – #21 Louisville vs #3 Florida
New Orleans  Jan 2nd
As good as Teddy Bridgewater and the Cardinals have been all season, this one will not even be close as the Gators are superior in every facet of the game. It will get ugly early and often, with Florida possibly havign a several touchdown lead before the half.

Tostitos Fiesta – #4 Oregon vs #5 Kansas State
Glendale, AZ  Jan 3rd
The Supposed-To-Be-BCS-Title-Game Bowl pits two incredibly potent offenses against each other. However, the Ducks are clearly superior with many more weapons. Kenjon Barner is a vastly better runner then Colin Klein or John Hubert, plus K-State will have to account for multi-threat De’Anthony Thomas. Oregon’s defense has improved and could be the key to the Ducks’ Fiesta victory.

AT&T Cotton – #9 Texas A&M vs #11 Oklahoma
Arlington, TX  Jan 4th
Both teams have to be peeved they were passed over for a BCS berth, which will make for an exciting game with two top offenses. As good as Landry Jones and Co are, Johnny Manziel is the most dynamic offensive player in the country. The Greater Stoops will have difficulty containing him, so the Aggies will triumph in a high scoring game.

BBVA Compass – Pittsburgh vs Ole Miss
Birmingham, AL  Jan 5th
A 6-6 record playing in the SEC is impressive from Ole Miss, while Pitt’s Big East one is less so. The Rebels have played stiffer competition all season and that will help them overcome a stingy Pitt defense. – #25 Kent State vs Arkansas State
Mobile, AL Jan 5th
They came oh so close to playing in a BCS bowl, but will have to settle for an Arkansas State team known more for its rushing. The Golden Flashes are better in that department and will simply be the better team, winning by a comfortable margin.

Discover BCS National Championship – #1 Notre Dame vs #2 Alabama
Miami  Jan 7th
Offense will be at a premium as the nation’s top two defenses square off. While Alabama has two 1000 yard rushers in Eddy Lacy and TY Yeldon, Notre Dame isn’t too shabby with Theo Riddick, Cierre Wood and George Atkinson III. They also have plenty of athletic playmakers to come away with some big plays, including Tyler Eifert who might be the X-factor. Their offense, along with a defense led by should-be-Heisman winner Manti Te’o that is perfectly built to take on Bama, will end The Streak as the Irish roll over the Tide in what should be an instant classic.
