The Denzel Washington spy thriller SAFE HOUSE, co-starring Ryan Reynolds, hopped into the first place spot in its second weekend at the box office, edging out THE VOW by $700,000. When the films both debuted last weekend it was the Rachel McAdams chick flick which had taken the top spot.
Despite lackluster reviews of its predecessor, GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE debuted in third, just $1M out of second place.
The Rock and Michael Caine saw their film JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND fall to fourth, though its decline in earnings was the smallest drop out of any film which debuted last week, and it did overcome another debuting movie.
THIS MEANS WAR, the romantic comedy with a bit of action thrown in was the second highest grossing Spy Vs Spy style flick of the weekend, hitting the 5th place spot in its first weekend at the box office – earning $17 M.
The 3-D re-release of STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE earned just $8M, putting it far out of reach from reaching the #5 spot. It had the steepest decline in earnings out of any film from the Top 10 last weekend.
