mock-draftIn the followup to yesterday’s updated first round here is the first version of my Round 2 mock. As always team needs, depth charts and those who had productive Combines are taken into account. Free agency is starting soon, so that will obviously shake up mock drafts everywhere. There are some in Round 2 who have first round talent, but fall here due to circumstance as they will inevitably due on Draft Day.

33) Jacksonville – Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Blaine Gabbert is not the answer at QB for the Jags. With a QB not worthy of #2 overall, they’ll take Barkley atop Round 2. That is unless some team trades back into the 1st, which seems likely.

34) San Francisco(from Kansas City) – Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU
Donte Whitner wasn’t very good while Dashon Goldson was franchised last offseason. Upgrading the secondary will be a priority for the Niners and the fast rising Cyprien will help in that.

35) Philadelphia – EJ Manuel, QB, Florida State
Nick Foles will be gone since he doesn’t fit Chip Kelly’s offense, so another QB will be needed behind Vick. Manuel makes the most sense since he fits the scheme.

36) Detroit – Arthur Brown, OLB, Kansas State
Both of the Lions’ starting OLBs are free agents, so help will be needed if one of them leaves. Brown is the best player available at the position.

37) Cincinnati(from Oakland) – Eddy Lacy, RB, Alabama
The Law Firm doesn’t have a capable backup to complement him. Lacy missed the Combine due to injury but is yet another productive back from Bama.

38) Arizona – Mike Glennon, QB, North Carolina State
Skelton, Lindley and Kolb. It’s hard to figure out which of them is worse, so it won’t be hard for Glennon to be better. Fitzgerald will appreciate his arm strength.

39) New York Jets – Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
Mark Sanchez is horrendous at QB and the sooner the Jets realize that, the sooner they can improve. Wilson has a good arm and the toughness to handle some punishment.

40) Tennessee – Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Titans need a corner and didn’t pick one until the 4th last year, so they must do it this year to fix their bad pass defense. Banks is an underrated player who has strong ballhawk skills.

41) Buffalo – DeAndre Hopkins, WR, USC
They have their QB, now they need to get him a weapon. Stevie Johnson is the only capable wideout on the roster. Hopkins’ explosive season has him rising up draft boards.

42) Miami – Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State
It’s looking more and more like Jake Long will not be back, so the position must be addressed early on. Watson is not a household name, but has freakish athletic ability for his size.

43) Tampa Bay – Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Dallas Clark is a free agent, but Josh Freeman needs a dependable mid range target. Ertz has the stats to prove he’s a receiving threat, but was a key piece in blocking for the Cardinal’s power running game.

44) Carolina – Matt Elam, S, Florida
Walter of walterfootball.com said it best, “Hiro Nakamura could stop time. Haruki Nakamura can’t stop anyone. He has to be upgraded.”

45) San Diego – Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
Both Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason are free agents. Jammer is getting older and Cason isn’t very good. So finding a replacement would be a good idea.

46) St. Louis – Robert Woods, WR, USC
Danny Amendola, Chris Givens or Brian Quick are more complementary receivers then true #1s. Maybe Woods can be that guy.

47) Dallas – Larry Warford, OG, Kentucky
If the ‘Boys had even decent interior O-line play, then Tony Romo could maybe look like a decent QB. This might not be the only pick at the position they make.

48) Pittsburgh – Alex Okafor, DE, Texas
The Steelers got very little, if any, pass rush out of Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward. Bringing in someone to help would be wise.

49) New York Giants – Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama
Rocky Bernard is a free agent and Marvin Austin has shown nothing so far. Williams has 1st round talent, but falls here due to circumstance and team needs.

50) Chicago – Dallas Thomas, OG/OT, Tennessee
Jay Cutler took a beating on a regular basis last season. If he wants to throw to new receiver Austin, then the Bears need to invest in multiple O-line picks.

51) Washington – Philip Thomas, S, Fresno State
Brandon Merriweather can’t stay healthy and Madieu Williams isn’t very good anyways. Without their 1st rounder, finding a safety is even more important.

52) Minnesota – John Jenkins, DT, Georgia
This is the perfect meeting of need and BPA as Kevin Williams is getting older. Jenkins is a mammoth tackle that is too good to pass up here.

53) Cincinnati – Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Bengals simply cannot play another game with the aging Nate Clements at safety. He’s playing out of position anyways, so the position must be addressed in the first 2 rounds.

54) Miami(from Indianapolis) – Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
The Fins traded corner Vontae Davis to get this pick and since the position is a mess anyways, they should use it for an upgrade.

55) Green Bay – Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
Greg Jennings is a free agent and has had trouble staying healthy. If Williams is available at this point, then Ted Thompson won’t hesitate.

56) Seattle – Kyle Long, OG/OT, Oregon
The ‘Hawks must find an upgrade at right tackle since the current starter is a huge liability. Long is versatile and could block his brother Chris of the Rams.

57) Houston – Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The Texans have been searching for a complement for Andre Johnson for years. Pretty soon they’ll need a #1 as Johnson gets into his 30s.

58) Denver – Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Picking Derek Wolfe last year as a DT didn’t work out since he mostly played at DE. The position is pretty barren so a pick must be used on the position.

59) New England – David Amerson, CB, North Carolina State
Aqib Talib is a free agent who must be resigned since Alfonzo Dennard could be headed to prison. An early pick must be used on the position.

60) Atlanta – Giovanni Bernard, RB, North Carolina
Michael Turner proved last season that he is pretty much and could be let go in order to preserve some cap room. Bernard is an excellent value here.

61) San Francisco – Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Mario Manningham is coming off ACL/PCL tears and could be released. Michael Crabtree is the only reliable receiver the Niners have on the roster.

62) Baltimore – Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse
Ed Reed is a free agent who may move on like Ray Lewis. In that case a replacement must be found for another long time Raven.
