Archeologists in Bulgaria found skeletal remains which conjure up discussions of vampires.
The dig was near, of all places, a monastery in the town of Sozopol on the Black Sea. In the chest cavity of both individuals were iron rods.
Bulgarian officials aren’t surprised by the find, however. National history museum chief Bozhidar Dimitrov stated that it was common practice “up until the first decade of the 20th century”. The practice went in line with Pagan beliefs that for certain individuals, were a stake not plunged through their chest cavity in the grave, they might potentially return as a vampire. There have reportedly been over 100 such skeletal remains found in previous such digs.
