A couple months ago I started an article where I was going through all the pilots that were being ordered by Studios. Before I did ABC and CBS so today, I am going to continue that list with Fox.. Also, since it’s later in the year then before… Some of these shows have been picked up, so I will let you know if that is the case.
Ben Fox is My Manny– This is a one camera comedy written by Dana Fox (Couples Retreat, What Happens in Vegas). It has recently been greenlit, but the comedy was ORIGINALLY set up in October with a script commitment. It’s about a tightly would single mother with a type A personality, who’s aimless brother moves in to help her raise her baby. Apparently the lead character is an exaggerated version of the writer’s real life brother. Fox, the channel not the writer, has this thing right now by taking scripts written by women… No offense to women, but they have made it a statement to do so, and so far like fox shows in general, the results have varied. It seems like a pretty generic plot, and the movies that Dana has written weren’t exactly great, so there’s no saying if this will be picked up.
Guilty– This is an hour long drama. It was recently greenlit, and had previously had a pilot commitment on it. It’s being produced by Warner Bros TV. I like to call it “House… The legal years… “ It centers on a brilliant, morally questionable defense attorney, (House?) who, after being falsely convicted of fraud , and stripped of his legal license, uses his unorthodox methods to solve the cases he’s been prohibited from handling, and to ultimately exact revenge on the men who set him up. It is being written by Marc Guggenhein (Flashforward) who used to be a lawyer. He is also executive producing with Greg Berlanti who he wrote Green lantern with. I don’t know about this one. I’m already not a fan of Law shows. They are boring and tedious, and use way too much legalese for my taste… you mix that in with the fact that both guys wrote what I call one of the worst movies in the last 20 years, and that they are blatantly ripping of House’s character, I don’t see this succeeding. If by some miracle, it DOES get picked up, it won’t last longer than a season.
Like Father– This one has promise. It is created by Scrubs creator and Cougar Town Co-Creator Bill Lawrence, so right off the bat you know it’s going to be funny. There isn’t much said about the plot. Just that it pulls from Lawrence’s own experiences and it’s about a father-son relationship. This is the first pilot his Dooozer banner has had picked up since they moved from ABC Studios to Warner Bros. TV.
Living Loaded– This too is a single camera comedy, as is MOST fox sitcoms. It’s based on the book by the same name by Dan Dunn. It centers on a loose partying blogger forced to change his career plans when he becomes a radio host. Here’s where it gets interesting/intriguing. It is created by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Creator/Star Rob McElhenney, and It’s Always Sunny’s Executive producer Rob Rossell. It is being written by, Rossell, McElhenney, and Dunn. McElhenney will serve as show runner, and will Executive Produce along with Charlie Day and Glen Howerton. Dan Dunn will serve as a Supervising Producer. I have a bitter sweet thoughts about this project. IF it gets picked up and is good (Which I want)… What is the future for It’s Always Sunny? Will they still have time to make that cable show when they are stuck Executive producing both a network channel sitcom which takes up 9 months out of the year, and McElhenney’s other FX show Unsupervised? I guess only time will tell.
Prodigy Bully– This is a half hour comedy based on the Prodigy Bully one minute movies by Hank Pearlman. The show revolves around a young boy genius who uses his brains and brawn to get whatever he wants. It is written by the awesome Mike O’Malley. John Wells is executive producing. Apparently this the second time this story has been ordered to pilot, the first back in 2005/2006, but nothing came of it. Other than acting as a scribe on Showtime’s Shameless, this is O’Malleys first Pilot pickup as a writer. I like Mike O’Malley. We’ll see how it turns out.
El Jefe– This is a half hour comedy written by Moses Port and David Guarascio. It stars Mercedes Ruehl, Ryan Hanson, and Roseanne’s awesomeness that is Martin Mull The story is about and affable but loveable 30 year old guy, gets tossed out of his Brentwood home, and moves in with his longtime Latin American nanny. There he goes head to head with her strong-willed son, and finds himself in a family and work life very different from the one he grew up in. It almost sounds Rob all over again. And it will prolly be just as racist as Rob was.
Goodwin Games– Created by the guys who do How I Met Your Mother. It’s a single camera comedy (shocker) starring Becki Newton. It revolves around three siblings, who reconnect after the death of their father. I don’t know what to think about this. It could be good based on the writers, but it sounds kind of boring.
