Lights Out

20 years ago Lights would still be on the air. 6 Rocky movies later the American public is tired of the sweet science. It’s a shame, our country’s history and identity is deeply rooted in the puglistisic sport, Lights Out explores how deep those roots go. The show follows an aging boxer who’s eventually pulled back into the sport he love/hates by a combination of pride, family obligation and need. We all love our family but even the purest form of love comes with strings attached.

There’s nothing like watching season pros do their jobs well. They know all the tricks of the trade and preform them effortlessly.

Glen Close and John Goodman bring a weight to season 4 of Damages that few others could. Close reprising her role as Machiavellian lawyer Patty Hewes,Good,an plays her foil, Howard Erickson, owner of a private military company.

Since 9/11 our espionage shows have served as a barometer of our country’s psyche.  24 showed our anger and subsequent need for revenge, we wanted every terrorist hunted down and killed. (Or tortured) Jack Bauer was more than ready to oblige us.  Now some ten plus years later, we are weary and skeptical as Homeland enters the scene stage left.

2011’s Best new show stars Claire Danes as a bi polar(thought she hides this from her superiors) CIA agent who becomes obsessed with investigating a soldier who returns home after seven years of captivity in Afghanistan.  The two play a season long cat and mouse game that leaves the viewer questioning their own assumptions.

Friday Night Lights

For almost a decade, television critics have sang the praises of dark shows, believing that they best reflect the human experience. During this time, network shows were often dismissed. What they missed and Friday Night Lights captures, is the joy of the struggle, the exhilaration of overcoming and conquering, and the essence of being human.  In 2011 we said goodbye to this critically acclaimed show, if you haven’t seen it do yourself a favor and catch up on it.

You can go home again.  Timothy Olyphant shines as steely cool as Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens. Jusitifed is set in the fictional small town of Harlan County, Kentucky, a place where everyone knows your name, but they also know your daddy’s. On the surface Harlan is a sleepy town of good ole folk. Turn over rock and you’ll find the Hatfields and Mcoys hyped up on crystal meth. Harlan could be one of the most lawless places on earth, good thing everyone is nice enough to break the law with a smile.

Justified is a commentary on the effect of where we grow up has on our lives. . Based on an Elmore Leonard short story, Justified has great dialogue and characters as you’d expect.  The show also boasts of the best cast on television. Margo Martindale won an Emmy for her role as the drug kingpin/ matriarch Mags Bennet. While Walter Goggins was nominated for Emmy for his role as the ethically challenged antihero Boyd Crowder.

Game of Thrones

I didn’t know this before watching the show. But George R. Martin has an extremely devoted following. He’s also written an intricate book, with warring families of nobility, barbarian tribes and fire breathing dragons. So when HBO announced that it was adapting Martin’s novel’s critics were understandably skeptical. They shouldn’t have been.  The show weaves in and out of the books complexities, creating the world in all its grandeur at the same allowing us to understand what motivates every character that inhabits the screen.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gillian has often described the show as one man’s transformation from Mr. Chips to Scarface. After the Season 4 the journey is complete Walter White stoops to new lows and we love every minute of it. Breaking Bad is like watching a car crash in slow motion. Best show on television.
