Several players who were expected to go in the first round and they went in unexpected places. Coby Fleener is reunited with Luck in Indy and Stephen Hill falling to the Jets in the middle of the 2nd are just a few examples of the continuing unexpectedness of this draft.

Steals
Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama – Baltimore Round 2 35th overall
With Upshaw getting mocked as high as the early teens in Round 1, getting him here at 35 is a definite steal for Baltimore. He is a great fit for the aggressive 3-4 defense the Ravens employ and takes over for Jarret Johnson. Getting great value and filling a top need is something teams strive for, but Baltimore definitely got that and much more in Upshaw.

Peter Konz, OC, Wisconsin – Atlanta Round 2 55th overall
Medical issues usually cause a guy to fall and that’s what happened to Konz, but Atlanta reaps the benefits. They get someone that normally would have gone in the back end of the first round. The Falcons get someone to replace Matt McClure eventually and play guard until then, so they get incredible value while also filling a big need at the same time.

Reaches
DeVier Posey, WR, Ohio State – Houston Round 3 68th overall
What? Houston did have a need at wide receiver, but many have Posey being picked in the 5th or 6th round, so reaching for him here is questionable at best. He has talent, but a number of red flags after missing most of his senior season due to off-field issues. There were much better prospects such as Mohamed Sanu or Chris Givens on the board, so what the Texans were thinking is anyone’s guess.

Bryan Anger, P, California – Jacksonville Round 3 70th overall
Huh? There is no doubt that Anger is the best punter in the class and will start on Day 1, but the top of the 3rd? With teams getting the about the same value signing specialists after the draft and the Jags having bigger needs, saying this pick is a reach is an understatement. Having already hit with Blackmon and Andre Branch in Round 2, you have to wonder what was going on in the Jags war room.

Surprises
Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State – Denver Round 2 57th overall
While taking a QB at some point was expected of the Broncos, taking one this early raised some eyebrows. The team had bigger needs to fill at this point in the draft and should have gone in that direction. If they wanted to win now with Manning, they could’ve gone with someone who would’ve contributed right away.

LaMichael James, RB, Oregon – San Francisco Round 3 61st overall
I thought the Jenkins pick was a surprise but at least it filled a need. Already having Frank Gore, Brandon Jacobs and Kendall Hunter, it’s hard to see both where James will fit in and why the team felt compelled to pick at this position. They already had a small, speedy back in Hunter, so what will they do with James? Returner? They already have Ginn for that.
