I almost didn’t see the first Iron Man movie in the theater despite all the raving reviews it was getting, partially because I didn’t have much attachment to the character at all.  I was really glad that I saw it before it made its unwatchable trek from the big screen to DVD.  When the sequel came out, I was very interested in seeing it on the big screen, but a new addition to my family made it nearly impossible to find time to leave the house for such pursuits, and when I did find time… it was gone.   So I waited for it to hit my local video store, tried and failed to rent it the first two weeks because other folks were quicker to get it off the shelves, and I waited some more.

Whether it was just a lesser film or I had just built up too much anticipation for this one in comparison to the first one, it wasn’t as good as its predecessor.  sure, Robert Downey Jr did just as great of a job in his role as he did the first one, though I think most would agree that his character didn’t have as much meat to it when comparing the two films.  I didn’t like the fact that they replaced Terrance Howard with Don Cheadle.  I’ve enjoyed Cheadle’s work since 1993 when he was on the show Pickett Fences.  I can accept the change in cast, given Cheadle’s standard of quality for his performances and knowing that the primary reason they did it was because of upcoming Avenger films.

Mickey Rourke’s character was a good option for one of the villains in the film, and Sam Rockwell was awesome as always.  Scarlett Johansson’s character was not only an exciting character from some of the action sequences in which she was involved, but the costumes probably took it to the next level.

All in all, I can’t put my finger on why this film wasn’t as good as the first one, but I will say that I rate the first one VERY high (4.5 or 5 stars, given the genre).  This one’s only a bit behind it and certainly an entertaining time.

Also a factor in why people should see this movie is because of all of the groundwork it builds towards future Avenger films.  Nick Fury was all over this movie and they laid the foundation for two other VERY major Avenger characters.

If you saw the first and are even mildly interested in comic book movies, see this one.  You’ll enjoy it.  It’s not an award winner, but I doubt you’d be expecting that.  Also, don’t expect a sequel which is better than its predecessor, because that’s not the case here.  This isn’t Dark Knight.

Given how well this movie did in the theater and on DVD, chances are that most of you who are reading this have already seen it, so I’ll just leave you with an image of Scarlett Johansson’s character.
