There’s so much going on in movie news right now that instead of covering it in a dozen separate articles, I wanted to give some summaries all in one spot.

First, the money…

BOX OFFICE TOP TWELVE (weekend gross figures in MILLIONS)

  1. Rio ($39.2)
  2. Scream 4 ($19.28)
  3. Hop ($11.17)
  4. Soul Surfer ($7.4)
  5. Hanna ($7.33)
  6. Arthur ($6.94)
  7. Insidious ($6.74)

  9. The Conspirator ($3.92)
  10. Your Highness ($3.895)
  11. Limitless ($3.79)
  12. The Lincoln Lawyer ($3)

Interesting financial fact:

If you disregard films like DOUBLE HOUR and Evil Bong 3-D which didn’t run on more than 5 total screens each, the rankings for last weekend look a bit different when you consider a per-screen average earning:

  1. Rio ($10.2k)
  2. Scream 4 ($5.8k)
  3. Atlas Shrugged Part I ($5.59k)
  4. The Conspirator ($5.55k)

  16. Lincoln Lawyer ($1763)
  17. Your Highness ($1405)

Another Judd Apatow flick is in the works, and it now has a title: THIS IS FORTY. Its plot is going to center on Pete and Debbie, the married couple from KNOCKED UP played by Paul Rudd and Apatow’s real life wife Leslie Mann. (Source: Gordon And The Whale)

Rumor has it that a script has already been written to remake Evil Dead, and Bruce Campbell is going to serve as a producer and possibly have a role in the film. Why am I reporting a rumor? Because it was started by Bruce Campbell himself in an interview, but there’s no sense as to whether or not he’s joking about it! (Source: SpinOff)

Disney is working on bringing The Lone Ranger to the big screen, and in addition to Johnny Depp being linked to the project, now Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the film (Source: TheWrap)

The guy in charge of the next G.I. Joe movie, Jon Chu, says you can expect a more “down and dirty” film in the sequel as the characters move forward from being just another action movie into something more.  Chu says he plans to “break it down and take the shine off and show that my Joes were the ones in the mud, the sand and the trees and in the epic worldwide adventures”. Instead of hitting the theaters hard like Marvel has been doing, DC comics continues to put new animated content straight to DVD.  While there has been a few Batman / Superman team-up animated flicks produced and at least one Green Lantern in the like, now DC is hitting up a graphic novel which I thought was destined to be the source material for Nolan’s upcoming Dark Knight Rises.  According to various sources, Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns is next up for the animated feature treatment.
