She is a Cosplayer, Graphic Designer, Ally of the Bat & Host of Kapow’s Fan Forged. Needless to say, the Cosplayer known as Breathless-Ness is a busy girl. But with a bit of wit and charm…and some help from Penny One, I was able to get her to jump in the hot seat for us.

Jack Nickelz: What first got you started in Cosplay?

Breathlessness: I went to my first convention in 2003, I think. That was where I first saw Cosplay happening! It piqued my curiosity and definitely spoke to my creative side. I had just finished studies in Graphic Design so I thought I’d give it a go.

Jack Nickelz: What was your first Cosplay?

Breathlessness: I was really into comics at the time, and wrote/illustrated my own comic as a major work for my design course. I thought “who’s costume do I know better than my own character?”, so I chose to become her through Cosplay! 581227_410420668999924_319881944_n

Jack Nickelz: How do you pick which Cosplay to do?

Breathlessness: Usually it’s a character I really like. I’m not sure I’ve ever Cosplayed someone purely based on costume, and if I’ve tried, then I’ve never finished it. It’s really the love of the character and wanting to portray them, which gives me the drive to create their costume.

Jack Nickelz: What have been some of your fav. Cosplays to do?

Breathlessness: All of my Batgirl costumes!! I’m in love with the character so much (both Steph and Babs) that making their costumes is so much fun! Cosplay can be very challenging, both mentally and in construction, but the Batgirl costumes never felt like a chore! They are also the most fun to wear, because really, who doesn’t like Batgirl!

Jack Nickelz: Did you plan to do all the costumes of Stephanie Brown or did it just happen that way?

Breathlessness: Well I really loved her Batgirl design and that was her first costume I made. Then I fell in love with Steph as Robin after that and just had to make that too (the colors are so hilariously fun to wear!). Then it was only natural to complete the trio and do Spoiler!

Jack Nickelz: Do you have a Cosplay that you are becoming known for?

Breathlessness: Probably the Batgirl costumes, maybe Barbara more since she’s back in the New52. They’re the costumes I’m most proud of so I like to re-wear them when I can. I’ve embraced her so wholeheartedly that people tell me how much I’m like her lol.

Jack Nickelz: What do your friends and family think of your Cosplaying?

Breathlessness: Most of my friends are Cosplayers too, which I’m so grateful to have due to this hobby! I’ve known them so long and we’re all pretty close. My high school friends (that don’t Cosplay) love it! They see me being myself, using the talents I’ve forged and admire what I do. My family thought it was a bit weird at first, but now – 10 years on, they show off my photo shoots to their friends and put my Cosplay pictures up on the walls at home!

Jack Nickelz: Have you ever decided not to do a Cosplay because it was too reveling?

Breathlessness: A long time ago, yes. Not everyone is 100% secure about their body and sharing it with other people so publicly. Cleavage and midriffs were something I avoided a lot. And it really limited my freedom. These days, I’m much more comfortable about the way I look and have Cosplayed a few characters I would never have dared too in my early days.

Jack Nickelz: What are your thoughts on body shaming and the bullying and harassment that seems to be going on in Cosplay?

Breathlessness: All of those words have a negative connotation and don’t belong in any social circle. They’re not restricted to Cosplay. It’s those sorts of negative activities that always played in the back of my mind when deciding not to make a revealing costume. We are all free to be whoever we want to be, so why should people feel the need to judge others on their appearance, especially through something as subjective as Cosplay. There are no rules to how you should look. And no one is being forced to like something that they don’t. Afford Cosplayers (and anyone for that matter) their freedom to be themselves.

Jack Nickelz: Tell us about Kapow’s Fan Forged?

Breathlessness: Fan Forged was so much fun to do! I had been doing some crafty stuff and sharing it online when Kapow approached me to do a series of geeky crafts in a DIY format for the wider community. It ranges from easy to more challenging things, and hopefully the viewers give these projects a go and have fun doing it!

Jack Nickelz: How does it feel to be featured on a Cos Couture list again? 1798431_700335003341821_331392428_n

Breathlessness: It’s really flattering! I never really Cosplay for anyone but myself, and my Cosplay page is just an opportunity to share my love with other people. To be featured on Cos Couture for costumes I’m really proud of and love, is a great feeling! Hopefully more people will see my work and like what I do! Not to mention that seeing other amazing Cosplayers who have done the same character is so cool, no one looks the same and we all have our own interpretations of the character and design!! It’s inspiring!

Jack Nickelz: How long have you been doing graphic design?

Breathlessness: 10 years, same as Cosplay! I studied for two years prior to graduating and that’s when I fell into the Cosplay rabbit hole.

Jack Nickelz: How has your background in Graphics helped out in your Cosplaying?

Breathlessness: It has developed the technical side of my mind a lot more, which really helps when trying to deconstruct a 2D image and re-create it in the 3D world. I’ve always been someone who likes to pull stuff apart to see how it works, to mesh that with art, craft and Cosplay is pretty satisfying.

Jack Nickelz: What got you into sneaker commissions?

Breathlessness: My background is visual arts, so I’ve always been into illustration and painting. I actually painted my first pair of sneakers many years ago! I got back into it because I was making ‘going-away’ gifts for some friends, and decided painting sneakers were the thing to do. It really snowballed from there, with friends asking me for commissions and then friends of friends. It helped me out when I was out of work for a period, but once I landed a new job it was too time consuming to continue.

Jack Nickelz: Thank you for taking time out to answer some questions. Is there anything else you would like to say to the fans and readers?

Breathlessness: Yes, thank you to everyone that follows my fan page! You are all so lovely and I appreciate your comments and messages so much. I enjoy sharing my work with you and knowing you all appreciate it, really makes me happy. Be kind to one another!
