The world of Judd Apatows hit Knocked Up is coming back to the big screen, only this time its about Pete and Debbie (played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann). In Knocked Up they were supporting characters as Allison’s (Katherine Heigl) sister and brother-in-law, and often times their messed up adventures in matrimony stole the movie from the two leads. It is therefore no surprise that Apatow is going back to these two characters to explore those misadventures more thoroughly.

The movie titled This is 40 is a look at the characters a few years after the events of Knocked up.  The only other things about the plot that are known are that Pete’s Music Label is struggling, and Debbie’s Dress shop staffed by Desi (Megan Fox) and another re-occuring character from Knocked up, Jodi (Charlene Yi) needs to help cover the houshold budget.

In an interview with the LA TIMES, Mann says ““It’s about getting older. What the hell happened? Am I making all the right choices? Is this where I’m supposed to be? Is this it? All of those dreams that you had when you were young, all of the possibilities, when you lock into marriage and kids, do the possibilities dwindle or go away?”

Along with Mann and Apatow’s own children reprising their roles from the previous film, 40 also stars Albert Brooks, Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Mike and Molly), and recent Tony AND Emmy winner John Lithgow. Also confirmed to return for a second go around is Jason Segal. No word on whether Martin Starr, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, or Katherine Heigl will return in any means. It is confirmed however that Seth Rogen WILL NOT be returning for a second round. He is busy getting ready to start filming in February on Seth and Jay vs the Apocalypse which he and his writing partner Evan Goldberg are co-directing for their Directorial debuts. Also in Apocalypse are Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny Mcbride, and Craig Anderson, so it is unlikely we will see Jay or Jonah returning to 40.

I am personally very interested in this project. Funny People was a blip on Apatow’s radar, but 40 year old virgin and Knocked up were hilarious movies, and though this sounds like a deeper more serious plot, I’m sure it will be funny, and fun… Especially when you can’t help but smile every time Paul Rudd and Jason Segal are ever on screen, anywhere, and you get well… other feelings when seeing Megan Fox. In any case, decide for yourself whether or not you want to see this move. Opens December 21st nationwide.
