Strikeforce, the main competitor to UFC, was dealt a huge blow recently when Fedor Emelianenko – the consensus #1 Heavyweight MMA fighter in the world – was forced to pull out of the upcoming Strikeforce event set to be aired on CBS.
The event will still have a middleweight title fight between Jake Shields and Olympic veteran / former UFC & Pride champion Dan Henderson in his Strikeforce debut, but it will now likely be the main event, as M-1 Global forced Fedor off the card.
According to several sources, Fabricio Werdum will still be Fedor’s next opponent, but the fight won’t happen until May at the earliest.
This situation seems uncomfortably similar to what happened with Affliction’s last show, which was canceled due to a failed drug test by Josh Barnett – Emelianenko’s opponent for the show. Affliction crumbled after the lost show and now ceases to exist.
