Momo went to her first convention in 2009, and has always been an avid fan of comic books, games, anime, and various other pop culture things. She loves getting to know others with the same interests and enjoys inspiring and being inspired by her fellow Cosplayers.

Jack Nickelz: So what started this grand adventure in Cosplaying for you?

Momo: Starting Cosplay sort of came natural to me living in a house of nerds. I grew up with Star Trek and Firefly with my dad, and my step dad is a huge gamer and owned an online anime company so there was no hope for me! LOL, I was raised into a world of fandom! Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and in elementary school I would wear my princess jasmine and sailor moon costumes on a daily basis.

Jack Nickelz: Do you remember what your first Cosplay was?

Momo: My first official Cosplay was Misa Amane from Death Note which I pulled together from my closet last minute. I went to Naka Kon 2008-9 which was my first anime convention and I felt so weird NOT dressing up, so the next day I went as Misa.

Jack Nickelz: How has Cosplay changed from when you first started?

Momo: When I first started Cosplaying, NO ONE KNEW WHAT IS WAS. It was strange and unusual… now it’s more socially acceptable and when I tell people I Cosplay, they say “oh, that’s so cool!” not “what… is Cosplay??”

Jack Nickelz: What have been some of your great memories from your convention experience?

Momo: I think my greatest memories at conventions are meeting people who I have interacted with on my Cosplay page in person, and making real friendships with them! I also love meeting little kids at cons because for them, I AM the tooth fairy or flutter shy. There’s nothing better than making a child’s day!

Jack Nickelz: what made you want to do that variation of Harley Quinn that you did?

Momo: I first did Nurse Harley Quinn because I got a nurse dress for $3 at a yard sale (I’m all about the savings when it comes to Cosplay, since I want to Cosplay so many characters!) so I gathered up the rest of accessories and made it work! I LOVED making the hammer and then the pop gun for my Casual Harley I put together.

Jack Nickelz: Has there ever been a time where you had to change or adapt an outfit because it was too reveling?

Momo: That’s a very good question! Some of my Cosplays, like Saeko from high school of the dead or Catwoman, I Cosplay those characters because I want to feel confident. I have huge self esteem issues and by being a strong, sexy heroine for a day, I can find those traits within myself. I don’t do it for attention, I do it for ME. There are some characters, like Erza from Fairy Tail or Riku from Final Fantasy 10, that I would love to Cosplay but won’t because I’m not comfortable with revealing that much skin. Some characters I will just have to love without Cosplaying them

Jack Nickelz: What are your thoughts on the whole Cosplay bullying and harassment issue?

Momo: ANY SORT OF BULLYING IS WRONG. There is no exception. It really enrages me when I see someone say things like “she can’t Cosplay sailor moon because she’s black” or “he’s too fat to be superman”. Cosplay is about having fun and loving what you love. It should be all positive feelings, and whenever I see that kind of negativity I feel compelled to say something. I’ve been bullied, my brother has been bullied, and it is never okay to spread hate.

Jack Nickelz: Who are some of the Cosplayers that you admire?

Momo: That’s such a hard question to answer because I admire so many people! If I had to choose, I really admire the Cosplayers who can create these crazy detailed armor sets. I’ve used worbla before and I really respect the patience they have in making such beautiful Cosplays! I also admire Cosplayers who can sew flawlessly like Yaya Han. She definitely knows what she’s doing!

Jack Nickelz: What does your friends and family think about your Cosplay work?

Momo: My mom has always supported my art and my friends are always excited to see what I’ll do next! It makes me so happy to have such wonderful accepting people in my life .

Jack Nickelz: How was it like, meeting one of the Doctors?

Momo: MEETING MATT SMITH MADE MY LIFE! He was so genuine and nice; I just wish I had more time with him. Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows and now when I re-watch it I’m like “ERMEHGERD I MET HIM!”

Jack Nickelz: What goes into picking the Cosplays you do?

Momo: If I fall in love with a character, and I have the time/funds, I will Cosplay that character. After I get the spark to Cosplay the character, something in my brain turns on the switch to start thinking on the creative side. For Example, when I first watched Rise of the Guardians I began to look up types of feathers before the movie ended. I loved the color scheme and the challenge it would bring to me artistically, and I could connect with how passionate and happy she was about bringing joy to children.

Jack Nickelz: What have been some of the fun Cosplays that you have done?

Momo: All of My Little Pony Cosplays are really fun to do and Toothiana of course! The most fun Cosplays are the ones I get to do with others. Cosplaying with friends is the best!

Jack Nickelz: Now I see that you have dabbled into some Pin up work. Will we see more of this down the line from you?

Momo: Yes, you will see more Pin Up shoots! I adore the style and it’s so much fun to dress up.

Jack Nickelz: And if you do more Pin up work, does this mean we will see you do more modeling outside of Cosplay?

Momo: I don’t really consider it modeling, but I do have other period themed shoots in the works. I have always been very passionate about history so I would love to do a Flapper style shoot and many others! I know it’s not “Cosplay” but I still like to do it for fun!

Jack Nickelz: Thank you for taking time out to do this. Is there anything else you would like to say to the fans and readers?

Momo: I just want to say thanks for reaching out and asking me to do this. I love Cosplay! The people on my page are so caring and positive and I’m very grateful to have such awesome support for doing what I love!
