Everyone knew it was only a matter of time. The Mortal Kombat web series was incredibly popular, and although a lot of people hated the direction they took with some of the characters, some people loved it. Well, apprently some of those people who liked it were at New Line, because according to The Hollywood Reporter, New line has hired Kevin Tancharoen the maker of the incredibly awesome and popular Short film Mortal Kombat:Rebirth and of the Web series to make it. Before this he was choregrapher for Madonna and Britney Spears and then had his directing debut with the “Fame” remake but his dream has been to make his concept for Mortal Kombat into a film.
Which was the original reason for the short film written by Oren Oziel and starring Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan. Instead of getting picked up as a movie like he wanted, the concept was picked up for a 10 part web series which aired in April. Each episode concentrated on the origin of a few of the titular Mortal Kombat characters.Over 50 million people saw the Webseries.
So it was off that success, that Warners and New Line execs thought it was time to try to revisit a big-screen effort. (The original crappy ass one directed by Paul W.S. Anderson was also made by New Line) Uziel is returning to write the new movie, which is still in the development stages. There is no actor attached and the new story will not serve as an extension of the game or Web Series.
In my opinion, I think this is awesome. I loved the short film, and the Web Series, and I think the concept was pretty awesome. The Webseries lacked in a few episodes due to the budgetary restrictions, so getting to see this idea with a larger budget and finally getting to see what the tournament looks like in the concept, is an awesome payoff in my opinion. The sleeper hit of…. Well whenever it comes out!
