Derek Jeter has joined the 3,000 Hit Club, an elite group of accomplished MLB players. He is the only member of the Yankees to achieve the feat. No one else in the majors has joined this club for years, and it will likely be a couple more seasons before anyone else becomes a member. With his entrance into the club, some are claiming that Derek Jeter is the greatest Yankee ever.

As a Yankees hater, I don’t know (or care) enough about the team and its history to make this claim or argue it one way or another.

Is it possible that Derek Jeter is a greater member of the New York Yankees than Mickey Mantle?

How about Babe Ruth, the man who dominated pitching and hitting in the MLB, setting records which stood for decades?

He does currently hold the franchise record for stolen bases, which was previously held by Stolen Bases king Rickey Henderson.

Many current fans can often lose sight of history when handing out superlatives. Very few have seen Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter play, and there’s no doubting those individuals would have their biases as well.

And what of Roger Clemens and Mariano Rivera? How do you compare one of the best starting pitchers or relieving pitchers of all time? They don’t have directly relatable statistics to a short-stop.

Can fair comparisons be made?

Does the way the New York Yankees franchise has handled its business in the past decade impact how people view a guy who was drafted by the Yankees?

What of his enviable dating history? Are guys influenced by the fact that Jeter has dated Mariah Carey, Jordana Brewster, Miss Universe Lara Dutta, Vanessa Minillo, Jessica Biel and now the woman named one of the sexiest women in the world by Esquire magazine, Minka Kelly.

Taking into account that Jeter has played his entire career for the Yankees and some of the other players he’s being compared to spent significant portions of their careers on other teams, it comes down to how you compare players.
