As anyone who knows me should know, I’m heavily into comic books. Recently, I’ve been engaged in a discussion on what books would be a good pick up with some good friends of mine in a comic book lovers group on Facebook. One of my friends, Big Lou, inspired me to do a list of books that any comic friend should be on the look out for when they are at their local pick up spots or downloading them to any of their devices.

I’m going to break this down into books and story-line arcs that maybe interesting to some. Now some of these maybe current and some maybe older, but trust me…they will still be good reads.

Avengers Arena

Avengers Arena is an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics that debuted in December 2012, as part of the Marvel NOW! relaunch. The series will see 16 young heroes from the Marvel Universe and pit them against each other in a kill-or-be-killed, reality-show-like scenario on Murderworld run by Arcade.

“The thing i like about this book is that they are using a villian that was very popular in the days, but you haven’t seen as much in the more recent storylines. I’ve always like the whole Arcade and Murder World thing. It was almost like the pre-cursor to SAW. Where Arcade put you in a situation where you have to make the tough choices.

Now more recently the two main books in Marvel X-Men and Avengers have been bogged down with alot of teen groups. From The Runaways, Young Avengers to everyone that was in The Initiative. Avengers arena condenses this mess into a 16 member “Survivor” style book with some interesting roster choices.

Cammi, DarkhawkHazmatMettleNico MinoruReptilJuston Seyfert and his SentinelChase SteinX-23, Apex, Nara, Kid Briton, Red RavenDeath Locket, Cullen Bloodstone, and Anarchronism.

Some of you fans may know these heroes from other books and teams, especially X-23. A great selling point to this book is the great art done by Kev Walker and how the writer, Dennis Hopeless, shows just how easily the lines but hero and villain can be crossed once given the proper motivation. Trust me this is a great pick up, especially once you check out the various mini storylines that are going on within the main one.”

The All New X Men…

All-New X-Men is an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics that debuted in November 2012, with the launch of Marvel NOW!. The series centers on the five original X-Men, brought from the past to the present to confront their future counterparts. The series replacesUncanny X-Men vol. 2 as the flagship book of the X-Men franchise.

“The premise of this book is very interesting. Now it is one we’ve seen this one before. We saw it when Cable and Bishop came back from the future. We’ve seen it when they had a young Tony Starks running around. The thing that makes this different is the fact that, that they aren’t going back and the cracks of seeing the future.

I think watching the younger Cyclops’ interaction with his brother, Havok or a young Jean Grey learning how to control her powers from a older Kitty Pride, who is teaching her the same lessons that an older Grey taught her, makes for interesting reading. What else is interesting is that in the current state of the X world, where things are split between the group with Wolverine and the group with the older Cyclops, what alignment the younger group takes.

On top of great artwork and writing, the thing that has me is the fact that they have yet to show how the future will change with the founding group of X Men no longer in their own time line.”

The opening story arc introduces the series’ leads, Alana and Marko, two lovers from different planets whose people are at war with one another. Alana comes from the technologically advanced, Landfall Coalition, the largest planet in the galaxy, and Marko is from Wreath, Landfall’s only satellite, whose people wield magic. Because the destruction of one of the worlds would send the other spinning out of orbit, the war was “outsourced” to other worlds. Although peace was restored on the two home worlds, the conflict spread across all the other known planets, whose native species were forced to choose a side. As Landfall and Wreath were on opposite sides, Alana and Marko met when she was assigned to guard him in a prison on the planet Cleave after he became a prisoner of war. They escaped together twelve hours after meeting. In the beginning of the series’ first issue, Alana gives birth to their daughter, Hazel, who occasionally narrates the series. Soon afterward, the trio are caught in between a team from each of their worlds, who end up slaughtering one another trying to capture them, a massacre that is blamed on the couple. On Landfall, Prince Robot IV is assigned by his father to capture him,  and comes into conflict with his counterpart from Wreath,a mercenary named The Will.  The ghost of a dead girl named Izabel is bonded to Hazel, and the four of them escape Cleave before being confronted by Marko’s parents.

“Now I’ll be honest in saying that I originally knew nothing about this book. Shame on me. It wasn’t until a member of the Comic Book Lovers group I’m in on Facebook., told me about it, that it registered on my read list. A great book with art that will grow on you. It takes a age old tale of people falling in love from opposite warring sides and turns it into a galaxy filled Sci-Fi Action adventure that caters to everyone.

You have the love between the two main heroes in the story for all the romantics. You have the various fight scenes for you action people. Ghost for the paranormal fans. Family tension, Robots, Aliens, Space ships, A topless spider woman…what more can you ask for.

So I make this a suggestion for those who need a break from the normal comic rah rah.”

Iron Man Season One

All-new original graphic novel, modernizing the formative first days of this super-hero icon that defined pop culture! Billionaire weapons manufacturer Tony Stark lived a life of wealth and privilege. That all changed when an on-site visit to a war-torn nation went horribly wrong, leaving Tony gravely injured in the hands of dangerous extremists – one a former friend. When asked to build a weapon, Tony instead constructed a mechanized suit of armor and escaped. But the horrors he left behind are coming for retribution, and the only way to stop them is for the carefree playboy to become the Iron Man!

This is a classic re telling of the “humble” beginnings of Iron Man. First off the art is lovely. Gerald Parel was a very good choice for this. the art works with the story. Adding a more unique feel to a tale that we all know and love. I love how it shows a side of the story that I didn’t know about and it involves our fav. group of soldiers…S.H.I.E.L.D.

This is a great read for someone who got into Iron Man because of the movies or someone who wants to hear a very unique view of the original tale.”

Adam – Legend of the Blue Marvel

This is the story of Adam Brashear , a African American superhero who was around in the year 1962. Due to fear and the coming Civil Rights Movement, Adam was asked by the President of the United States to stand down as the Blue Marvel. Now in the present time, Blue Marvel’s villain has returned and Blue Marvel may be the only one powerful enough to stop him.

“The reason why I love this storyline is because One…it introduces us to a Black hero who goes through the pressures of having to be black in a time where that was almost like a curse. Two…it shows the affects of his choices at the time. How those choices built and shaped his views on things. The fact that it shows how quickly the people turned on him as they found out it was a black man under the mask.

the man that was responsible for saving the world over and over was treated like a plague due to his skin color. One of the big selling points to me was Adam’s interaction with Namor, who as a mutant understands the issues Adam is going through.

I also suggest this as a read for all those who are getting into the Infinity series and the mighty Avengers comic…you are going to want to catch up on Adam and learn all you can about him.”

Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without A Face

The brutal and relentless Crime Master is the least of the Spider-Man’s concerns! As the bloody wave of violent crime spreads across the city, Peter Parker discovers the greater monster is the eminent biologist, Dr. Otto Octavius! If Spider-Man lives to escape the grisly clutches of New York’s most dangerous killer, will he survive a final encounter against the heartless, death-dealing scientist?

“Just like the Blue Marvel book this one is based in racism as well as the gritty crime world in the Noir universe. If you haven’t read any of the Noir books, please go and pick up the Noir Spider-Man.

Now the storyline is very emotionally charge as we see appearances of Noir’s version of Doc Ock, Felicia Hardy and Robbie Robinson. All of this is centered around Robbie’s search for Black people that have been turning up missing. As the story unfolds, it becomes a sick and twisted view of how Blacks were viewed and devalued you back in the days.”

Well thank you for taking time out to read this. I hope that you at least pick up one of these books and see what I’ve seen and enjoy some of the best writing in comics. Check you guys next time.
